Risks of Needing LTC

Long-Term Care services can become necessary at any age, but most LTC services are used by older people. Younger people may have a sudden, serious illness or accident, requiring LTC services. However, older people have all of those risks plus the risks of progressive, chronic and degenerative conditions requiring assistance with the activities of daily life.

Life expectancy increased substantially during the 20th century, and is expected to continue to do so during the 21st. However, life span has changed very little. While medical technology has reduced the incidence of premature death, biomedical research and development has made very little progress in slowing the aging process itself.  You may indeed live longer than your parents, but most likely will have many more frail years as well.

As we get older and because we are living longer the likelihood of needing assistance with the activities of our daily life grows with every passing year.  Most older Californians worry that they will outlive their financial resources and become dependent upon public assistance. They worry that their health will decline and leave them helpless and in need of custodial care. This worry is not unfounded or a delusion. It is very real. Most Californians are at risk of loosing their hard-earned financial independence.
