Stroke Program Receives Award and Major Gift from Disney
Stroke Program at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank to receive Providence Health & Services’ President’s Award for Excellence
Burbank, CA - The Primary Stroke Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center will receive Providence Health & Services’ President’s Award for Excellence for its success in treating stroke victims. The center is within the hospital’s Hycy and Howard Hill Neuroscience Institute, which also will announce a major gift from the Walt Disney Foundation.
The program, established in 2007 to fill a serious gap in stroke treatment and care in Los Angeles County, has seen highly successful outcomes – including the recovery within days for one stroke patient and the rehabilitation of a young pregnant woman who rebounded from extremely critical condition and is now home with her infant.
The ceremony will be attended by John Koster, M.D., President and CEO, Providence Health & Services, Barry Wolfman, Chief Executive, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, and members of the “stroke team.” The event will be held at the Medical Center's Healing Gardens at 501 S. Buena Vista Street in Burbank on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 9am.
The Stroke Center at Providence Saint Joseph was established just 2 and a half years ago under a program that recognizes this type of diagnostic and treatment specialty as an emerging national standard of care – in reality, it means that ambulances will bypass other hospitals to get to a stroke center in those critical first hours. The stroke team has seen numerous successes due to its highly specialized training, diagnosis expertise and cutting-edge treatment. The stroke team treats as many as 40 patients a month.
