BPL serves the city of Burbank, California with 3 library branches.

In May of 1913, Burbank Public Library was started as a branch of the Los Angeles County Library, and the Ladies Auxiliary acted as custodians of the library, which was located in the same building as the Library of the "Brotherhood." As the BPL began to thrive and grow under local leadership, the library opened its own building with locally raised funds, and in 1938, the Burbank Public Library became an official city department.

As the library continued to grow, the Buena Vista Branch Library was established in 1943 in the valley section of Burbank. In 1954, the West Burbank Branch Library on Burbank Boulevard opened, and in 1956 the North Glenoaks Branch Library was opened. All of these locations housed thousands of literature and research books and continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s. With the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978, the smaller North Glenoaks Branch Library was closed.

The 1980s and 1990s saw continued growth that mirrored the growth of Burbank, California. The library began offering educational services for youths as well as adults, and they expanded their collection to offer modern research tools. In the past few years, BPL has integrated free Internet service for the public. In 2001, the Buena Vista Branch Library was opened, giving further library access to citizens of Burbank.

Today, in addition to books, videos, and other research materials, Burbank Public Library sponsors many public events for adults and children. BPL also has rotating and changing monthly exhibits in each of its library branches, almost always relating to Burbank's history.
