As with many other sports, paintball brings with it its own set of expressions and terminology, some of which can be rather jarring to those who have no prior experience of them. If you are thinking of trying out paintball, here is a list of some of the basic jargon you might find yourself confronted with.

ACTION (1) – This can refer to the way something is operated – for example, the way a paintball gun is fired.

ACTION (2) – This can also refer to a battle or combat scenario played out during the game.

AGITATOR – This refers to a device that has been integrated into a paintball hopper. It enables the paintballs to drop into the feed tube in a steady fashion, helped by a small LED sensor which detects a lack of balls and then remedies the situation.

AIRSMITH – This refers to someone trained to work with high pressure gases, and can thus make and maintain paintball hoppers in a safe manner.

ASA – ASA stands for Air System Adaptor, which is the system on a paintball marker to which the air bottle is screwed into.

AUTO, FULL – This refers to the action of continuously firing and reloading the paintball gun while keeping the trigger firmly pressed down.

AUTO, SEMI – This refers to the action of continuously firing and reloading the paintball gun – however, unlike the Full Auto, it requires the trigger to be pressed each time.

AUTO TRIGGER – This refers to the trigger on pump action paintball guns, which is held in the firing position permanently, thus ensuring that the user needs only to pump the gun for it to be fired.

BACK BOTTLE – This is a system where the Air System Adaptor is situated at the back of the paintball gun, where the constant air tank is also located.

BACK BOTTLE ADAPTOR – This refers to a system where the Air System Adaptor is situated at the back of the paintball gun, and somehow connected to a gas supply.

BARREL BREAK – This refers to the occurrence of a paintball actually breaking while inside the barrel of the paintball, thus coating the inside with paint and resulting in both inaccurate shooting and more paintballs breaking.

BARREL PLUG – This is a safety device which is installed into the front of paintball guns in order to prevent it firing. It should be in place at all times when a game is not actually being played in order to prevent accidents.
