The event begins at 6:00 P.M. with free salsa lessons courtesy of Francisco and Stacey of The Dance Family Studio. Participants learn the latest dance steps, refine their steps and sharpen their moves before putting it all into practice when the band strikes up.

At 7:00 P.M., the Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra takes the stage.

Escovedo is an artist who broke down the barriers of smooth jazz, salsa, Latin jazz and contemporary music. His name has been synonymous in the music industry for more than 50 years. Born 1935 in Pittsburg, CA, he began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland. At the age of sixteen, he began playing the saxophone and then discovered percussion. This began his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin jazz music.

In 1970, Escovedo formed the band Azteca and toured the United States with Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. He recorded two albums on Columbia records which are now considered collector’s items, Azteca and Pyramid of the Moon. In 1972, Escovedo toured and performed with Carlos Santana and recorded three major albums, Moonflower, Oneness and Inner Secrets. In 1978, Escovedo and daughter Sheila E. recorded two albums on Fantasy records Solo Two and Happy Together, both produced by Billy Cobham.

Escovedo’s versatility as a percussionist has been featured in performances and recordings by a wide range of artists such as Carlos Santana, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Woody Herman, Stephen Stills, Anita Baker, George Duke, Boz Scaggs, Andy Narell, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Barry White, Arturo Sandoval, Poncho Sanchez, Chick Corea, Dave Valentine, Najee, Gerald Albright, Prince and many others.
