Gordon R. Howard Museum

George Westmore Research Library & Museum
Gordon R. Howard Museum at Burbank Historical Society.

In 1917, George Westmore founded the first makeup and hair department at a major Hollywood studio at Selig Polyscope Studio. Westmore quickly became the leading hairstylist and makeup artist used by Hollywood actors before they went on film. In addition to being the first famous movie stylist, Westmore was also the patriarch of a family of movie make-up and hairstylists.

Westmore's olldest son, Montague "Monte" Westmore, was the make-up supervisor on two of the most popular films of the age (and of all time), Gone with the Wind (1939) and Rebecca (1940). He had three sons, Marvin, Michael, and Montague "Monty Jr," all of whom also became famous Hollywood make-up artists. The Westmore's of Hollywood are to be awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in October of 2008.

The George Westmore Research Library & Museum also revived the "George Westmore Lifetime Achievement Award" and created the "George Westmore Award of Excellence," an industry-wide celebration of excellence in makeup and hair design. The awards recognize individual excellence in Motion Picture, Television, Theatrical Stage, Live Performances, Opera, Print Publication and Advertising.

The Westmore Museum is home to cosmetics and hair styling memorabilia, books, and photographs dating to the golden era in Hollywood. This is a great place for film buffs or those doing research on Hollywood's makeup and hairstyling history.

The Museum is currently opened by appointment only..
